Monterey to Manresa - 21st to 23rd May

Monterey

We started the day with a walk along the Old Fisherman’s Wharf, the marine layer was still hanging around so it was chilly.

At the end of the Wharf we found a fresh fish market selling giant crabs, lobster, the works!  All straight off the trawler.

A fisherman friend told Allen that restaurant grade Calamari is the BEST bait.  At only $2 a box we can’t go wrong.  If he doesn’t catch any fish we’ll eat the Calamari.

Once in town we followed the Historical Trail and stopped at the Old Whaling Station Adobe built in 1847 that is now used for weddings and special events.

The sidewalk is made out of whale vertebrae shaped into diamond pavers.

 The Gardens were magnificent.

 A peek inside the
 Mission Courtyard

Also found California’s first brick house/theatre.

Watsonville

Stayed the night at Sunset State Beach, Watsonville for $35 per night.

The showers were coin operated but clean.  There was no water, electricity or dump station on site.

Since 2010 over 70 State Parks/Beaches have closed due to budget cuts.

We’ve noticed the facilities in some of the Parks have deteriorated.

The National Parks are usually better value for money and situated in the best locations.  It’s a pleasant alternative to staying in an RV Park with full hook-up.

La Selva Beach, Santa Cruz
Drove a massive 3km to the next camp!  It was a luxury KOA resort style campsite.  On our last trip we averaged 300kms per day so it’s great to be able to travel at a more leisurely pace.

From the KOA we were able to stroll along the beach, something we love to do.

Manresa State Beach is popular with surfies.  We checked out the beach shacks and holiday homes along the water front.

Sand Dollar

We were fascinated by the round discs we kept finding on the beach.  On one side there was a pattern like a marijuana leaf.  Apparently they are called Sand Dollars and when I realised what they were, I wished I hadn’t filled my pockets with them.  They were  living skeletons of a marine animal related to the sea urchin.  Just what I’ve always wanted.

KOA La Selva Beach

Back at Camp we decided to relax by the pool and enjoy a dip in the hot tub.   We got in and switched on the spa jets and floated into ecstasy…..

Went for my morning ablution and got more than I bargained for.  Got in the shower, turned on the water, soaped up and made a grab for the shampoo…..(BIG SCREAM) what’s that in my bag.

A cheeky frog had somehow made its way into my bag.  When he jumped, I shrieked.  Where’s he going to land next?
