Arkansas 16th to 19th August

Arkansas 16-19 August

Heart of the Ozarks Campground, Flippin

Pulled up to Reception without a prior booking and met the wonderful Susan Enyart, part owner and one man band.

Susan came out to greet us, the fresh coffee was brewing and a tour of the facilities was thrown in.  She also suggested we sit in the rocking chairs on the veranda and ‘chew the fat’ over a cup of coffee.

Can’t imagine what she would have done if she was expecting us.

In her office she had a map of the world and asked campers to place a pin in their hometown.  Somehow Australia was missing.  We can’t have that!!  We drove straight to Wal-Mart and bought some green card and I made a replica of Aus and clipped a little koala on there.

The next morning we explored the town of Flippin in Marion County (population 1,357) and walked around the Flippin shops, the Flippin market but I couldn’t see a Flippin thing worth seeing.

The evening was to be an experience I will never forget.  The neighboring town of Yellville was celebrating “Music on the Square” a FREE festival held every Saturday night during the summer months.  The Farmers Market was also a highlight that evening (lots of soap and birdseed).

Susan had kindly given us a voucher to have dinner at the Yellville Razorback Grill.  The Diner was packed BUT I soon got the impression we were a tad overdressed?  There must have been a sale of denim overalls last week as the general attire was hillbilly dungarees!!  The atmosphere was electric as the Arkansas Razorback Baseball Team were playing and it was being televised on two big screens, thankfully everyone was watching that and not us.

As for Music on the Square, the amazing Mesa Mitchell Band came out and socked it to us.

Mesa had a mighty powerful voice, she could sing anything from Janice Joplin to Patsy Cline and was gorgeous looking too.

During the break there was a Raffle.  I have never prayed so hard in all my life….PLEASE GOD DON’T LET ME WIN ANYTHING!!!   The prizes were as varied and weird as those who donated them.  Prizes: USA flag, a used candle, screw-driver set, cleaning fluid, a tee-shirt with the words Vote Dwayne Giles for Judge and a few others that I missed.

Spent one night in a Wal-Mart carpark in Springdale.

Allen managed to sniff out the Springdale Railway Station.

We climbed all over the passenger train and I cuddled the cheeky Station Master but he looked like a stunned mullet.
